OpenPrint P7000HD Cartridge Series of Line Matrix Printers
Question:
What is "OpenPrint"?
Answer:
OpenPrint is Printronix’s newest product that provides seamless workflow between your ERP and business printing. OpenPrint enables PostScript and PDF® printing for the P7000 High Definition (HD) Cartridge Series of Line Matrix Printers. It is compatible with today’s modern enterprise resource planning (ERP) environments, including Oracle®, SAP®, Linux and Windows®.
Question:
Does OpenPrint require any additional software to work in my IT infrastructure?
Answer:
No, customers can use the standard Postscript drivers included with their ERP systems such as Oracle and SAP. The printer also includes OpenPrint specific drivers.
Question:
Can I replace my laser printer with an OpenPrint line matrix printer without installing new drivers?
Answer:
Yes, If a current PostScript driver is installed there is no need to change it. Although, by installing the OpenPrint driver, the customer will have access to printer specific parameters (i.e. sure scan options, grey scale selections, etc.).
Question:
What are the differences between the new OpenPrint P7000HD high definition cartridge printer and earlier P7000HD models?
Answer:
OpenPrint output quality is better because it utilizes PostScript image and graphic capabilities as well as sure scan bar code software. The previous P70000HD printer was limited to using the Printronix Windows driver. The new OpenPrint printer can use any Printronix or non-Printronix PostScript driver.
Question:
Can the OpenPrint series provide quality reproduction of complex character sets?
Answer:
Yes, the high definition quality allows for printing fonts as small as 6 point. This is achieved with the smaller 11 mil print tip.
Question:
Should I replace my existing P7000 Line Matrix printer with OpenPrint P7000HD?
Answer:
OpenPrint P7000HD offers higher print quality. If you are upgrading your legacy IT system to a new ERP solution this is the perfect opportunity to transition to OpenPrint. Otherwise it is not necessary to move to OpenPrint P7000HD.
Question:
I have a P7000 standard printer using SAP SmartForms. Should I upgrade to OpenPrint?
Answer:
Not necessarily. If you are happy with your current print output you can continue to print using the Printronix SAP SmartForms driver. If you are upgrading your IT platform, it might be a good opportunity to look at the benefits of OpenPrint.
Question:
What printer models are available for OpenPrint P7000HD?
Answer:
The OpenPrint cartridge series of line matrix printers is comprised of three distinctive models and allows you to configure the right solution for any industrial printing challenge. The three models are Quiet Cabinet, Pedestal and Zero Tear. Please visit www.printronix.com/openprint for more details.
Question:
Can a new OpenPrint printer replace a serial matrix printer?
Answer:
Yes. For a more durable solution, OpenPrint can replace single or multiple serial printers. Our Zero Tear model can replace the typical serial printer short run applications. Plus the capability of PostScript print language that is more compatible with new applications.
Question:
Why should I consider switching from a laser printer to an OpenPrint P7000HD line matrix printer?
Answer:
Printronix’s OpenPrint line matrix printers are superior performers in mission critical high speed print applications, even in harsh working environments. The latest Open Print-enabled P7000HD Series models require less downtime and maintenance for cartridge ribbon changes. The result is more uptime with lower service and operating costs. Line matrix cartridge consumables last longer and are six times less expensive than laser toner cartridges. This is especially important in production environments where consumable costs dominate the total cost of ownership. As printing volume increases, line matrix’s consumable savings grow dramatically.
Question:
What are the environmental advantages of line matrix printing?
Answer:
The OpenPrint P7000HD Cartridge Series of Line Matrix Printers are ENERGY STAR® qualified, providing operational energy savings compared to laser printers. Additional environmental advantages include: less consumable waste, use of high recycled content paper, easier recycling of printed paper, less ozone depletion and none of the fine particulate emissions found in laser toner cartridges. In addition, the OpenPrint Printronix P7000HD Cartridge Family is engineered to last for years. This is a key ecological benefit over shorter life cycle products such as laser and serial printers.
Question:
Does OpenPrint contain all the great PrintNet™ remote printer management capabilities that I am used to?
Answer:
Yes, All the PrintNet Enterprise software features that you have become accustom to, are still available. The optional Ethernet connectivity and the JAVA based remote management software allow all OpenPrint P7000HD printers to be compatible with existing workflows.
Question:
How can I remotely manage my printer from another location?
Answer:
PrintNet Enterprise™ software gives you control of your entire global printing network from any networked computer. IT staff can manage printers from across the country or other parts of the world. Custom alerts can be set up to notify IT managers on printer issues via email, pager, or mobile phone messages.
Question:
What is the product warranty?
Answer:
Warranties vary by region and can be viewed by visiting the Services and Support page on our web-site.
Question:
Does Printronix offer additional warranty options?
Answer:
Printronix offers various extended warranties and maintenance contracts. Please contact your local Printronix sales representative to see what options are available in your area.
Question:
What cartridge ribbons are available for the OpenPrint series of line matrix printers?
Answer:
Standard Life HD
Cartridge Ribbon– Single Pack
Lowest cost per purchase for customers with restrictive budget. Available in a single pack.
Extended Life HD
Cartridge Ribbon – Single and Four Pack
For customers that want to focus on a lower total operation cost, the Extended Life cartridge ribbon is the best solution.
Question:
Is this a ‘plug and print’ solution?
Answer:
Yes, once the drivers have been downloaded and installed, the printer is ready to print.
Question:
Can I replace my laser printer with an OpenPrint P7000HD printer without installing new drivers?
Answer:
Yes, many laser printers utilize PostScript. If you are using another printer emulation like PCL-5, a PostScript driver must be installed. Since laser printers and line matrix printers have different options and capabilities, it is always best to install OpenPrint drivers for the best results.
Question:
PCL-5 is also prevalent in modern IT systems. Why isn’t PCL-5 supported in OpenPrint?
Answer:
PCL-5 is optimized to use HP laser printing technology. PostScript has more flexibility for quality printing of any size or format. Postscript and PDF are sufficient to cover modern and future IT environments.
Question:
Can I use OpenPrint and also have access to the IGP emulations, PGL or VGL?
Answer:
No. The OpenPrint P7000HD printer only has PostScript and PDF. PostScript has excellent graphics capabilities built in already; there is no need for both PostScript and PGL/VGL.
Question:
How is the quality of OpenPrint compared with P7000HD today?
Answer:
OpenPrint output quality is better because rather than relying on the host system to scale the output, OpenPrint processes PostScript and creates the text, barcodes, and images at the target density.
Question:
Can all supported barcodes be detected and replaced?
Answer:
Most barcodes found in forms and PDF files can be replaced. However, barcodes created with small, narrow element widths are not likely not be detected or replaced with barcodes close to the original dimensions.
Question:
What about 2-D barcodes – can they be replaced?
Answer:
No, only 1-D barcodes can be replaced.
Question:
Does the quality setting (DPI) have an impact on the barcodes replaced?
Answer:
Yes. For the best results with sure scan, set the DPI to 180x180. A DPI of 180x90 is also excellent for picket fence barcodes, but should not be used for ladder barcodes. Conversely, a DPI of 90x180 is great for ladder barcodes, but not picket fence barcodes. A DPI setting of120x120 is also acceptable for sure scan, but 180x180 DPI is recommended. Sure scan is not active when printing at 90x90 DPI.
Question:
Does the quality setting (DPI) have an impact on the speed and quality of output?
Answer:
Of course. Based on the type of print jobs and the quality required, you will have to determine the best balance of speed and quality by changing the DPI.
Question:
Can I upgrade my existing HD printer to OpenPrint?
Answer:
No. The older HD hardware does not support the new OpenPrint software, firmware and security, and therefore cannot be upgraded.
Question:
When I replace my old P7000 HD with the OpenPrint version, can I use the old drivers?
Answer:
No, you must install the new OpenPrint drivers. The new drivers are optimized to perform with PostScript and sure scan software.
